Scope

This article formally communicates Arctera’s support stance on Microsoft Outlook Web Folders access to Arctera Insight Archiving Personal Archive. It applies to all customers who continue to use, or attempt to enable, Microsoft Outlook Web Folders (including registry modifications for Outlook 2013–2016).

Therefore, concerned customers must transition to the Personal Archive Outlook add-in or Personal Archive Web URL before December 31, 2025. 

Background

• Customers have historically used Web Folders as an integration point with Microsoft Outlook.

• Microsoft deprecated this feature in 2017 due to security vulnerabilities and has not maintained official support since then.

• Some customers still attempt to re-enable Web Folders through unsupported hacks, but these methods are unreliable, insecure, and not supported by Microsoft.

• Arctera has continued to receive support cases from customers who expect Web Folders to function, despite its deprecation and associated risks. Therefore, to eliminate ambiguity, Arctera is formally ending the support for Arctera Insight Archiving Personal Archive access via Web Folders.

End of Life (EOL) timelines

• After December 31, 2025, Arctera Insight Archiving Personal Archive access via Web Folders will be fully unsupported and considered retired. Arctera Support will no longer provide troubleshooting, fixes, or case handling for the same.

• Arctera documentation and compatibility charts will be updated to reflect this removal.

• An alert about deprecation will be published in the Arctera Insight Management Console. 

• Email notifications will be sent to administrator contacts.

Customer impact

• Customers currently using Microsoft Outlook Web Folders to access Personal Archive must transition before December 31, 2025. Support will provide transition guidance only; no fixes for Web Folders will be delivered.

• Any registry hacks or workarounds to enable Web Folders in Outlook will be treated as unsupported configurations.

• After EOS/EOL, any cases logged referencing Web Folders will be closed with reference to this article.

Alternatives to access Insight Personal Archive

To continue the access, customers should select one of the following supported methods:

• Personal Archive Outlook Add-in (Recommended) - Provides seamless integration with Microsoft Outlook. A familiar and efficient way to access archived content directly from the Microsoft Outlook interface. Refer to the Accessing Insight Personal Archive Using Outlook Web Add-in article.

• Personal Archive Web Access - Provides direct access to the Personal Archive through a supported web browser. Customers can bookmark the Personal Archive URL for quick and reliable access. For the updated Arctera SaaS URLs, refer to the Arctera Insight SaaS URL Updates article.
