Description

As officially announced by Microsoft, Basic Authentication will be disabled in Exchange Online effective January 1, 2023. This will have an impact on your Arctera Archiving environment if O365 Sync or Folder Sync is configured to use Basic Authentication.

What’s changing?

Microsoft is removing the ability to use Basic authentication in Exchange Online for Exchange ActiveSync (EAS), POP, IMAP, Remote PowerShell, Exchange Web Services (EWS), Offline Address Book (OAB), Outlook for Windows, and Mac.

This change by Microsoft requires customers to move from apps that use Basic Authentication to apps that use Modern Authentication.

When will the change take place?

Microsoft has already started to implement this change. New Microsoft 365 tenants are created with Basic Authentication already turned off as they have Security defaults enabled. In September 2021, Microsoft announced that effective October 1, 2022, they will disable Basic Authentication for Outlook, EWS, RPS, POP, IMAP, and EAS protocols in Exchange Online with a one time extension available through January 1, 2023.

Impact to Veritas Alta Archiving

If you have configured Arctera Archiving O365 Sync or Folder Sync to connect to Microsoft 365 with Basic Authentication, your Arctera Archiving environment will be adversely impacted once Microsoft disables Basic Authentication on January 1, 2023.

Arctera Archiving currently supports both Basic Authentication and Modern Authentication to connect to Microsoft 365 tenants. We highly recommend switching to Modern Authentication as soon as possible to minimize the impact to Arctera Archiving.

Action Required:

Arctera customers are required to switch to Modern Authentication before Microsoft’s deadline of January 1, 2023, to continue the normal operation of their environment. Please refer to the articles below to configure Modern Authentication (App based) for O365 Sync and/or Folder Sync.

Verify if Basic Authentication is used for O365 Sync:

  1. Log into Arctera Administration Portal

  2. Navigate to Archive Collectors

    • Note: If provisioning is being done manually then no further action is required.

  3. Select Manage from the Exchange Online tile

  4. Under Credential Management tab take note of the Credential Type

    • If Azure AD registered app configuration is seen, no further action required.

    • If Powershell credential + Exchange services credential is seen, O365 Sync is using Basic Authentication, please follow the articles below to use Modern Authentication:

Verify version of on-premises Folder Sync if used:

  1. Log onto on-premises Folder Sync Server

  2. Launch ArchiveTools Management Console

  3. Navigate to Archive Accelerator - Task List folder

  4. Verify version used.

  • If version is V1.95.7815.xxx, no additional steps are needed as this version uses Modern Authentication.

  • If version is below V1.95.7815 then Folder Sync needs to be upgraded.
